The Quiet Girl In The Back Of The Class

Do you know that quiet girl in the back of the classroom?

Whether you are in school now or graduated twenty years ago, you can probably think of at least one girl like this.

She is the one who never talks in class. She is the one who never puts her hand up even when she knows the answer. She is the one that buries her head in her work. She is the one who almost never looks up and never takes part in discussions.

Do you remember the time that the class clown had everyone in class laughing really hard and it took the teacher fifteen minutes to get everyone to calm back down and be quiet? Did you notice that the quiet girl in the back of the class still kept her head down and didn't laugh out loud and start making jokes of her own like everyone else?  Did you know that inside she was laughing? Did you know that inside she wanted to be a part of the joy and laughter? Did you know that she was so full of social anxiety that no matter how much she wanted to take part she was just too afraid? Did you know that if you would have only looked at her and talked to her that she would have opened up a little and let the laughter out?

Do you remember the time when someone came into the class with a camera to take photos for the yearbook? Do you remember how everyone looked at them and raised their arms in the air and made goofy faces? Did you notice that the quiet girl in the back of the class kept her face down and didn't look at the camera and make a goofy face? Did you know that she wanted to? Did you know that she wanted to be a part of the fun? Did you know that twenty years later she would look at that photo in the yearbook with regret and wish that she had been a part of it all? Did you know that if you had given her a nudge she would have looked up? Did you know that if you would have said something as simple as "come on" and made a silly face at her that she would have laughed and made a face as well. Did you know that if you had tried to get her to take part that she would have?

Do you remember that time when your friend wasn't at school and so you didn't have your regular chatting buddy in class? Do you remember how you talked to the really chatty girl to your left that day instead? Did you realize that the quiet girl in the back of the class wished you had talked to her? Did you know that if you had said something to her that she would have said something back? Did you know that if you had made the effort to talk to her that she would have opened up and talked to you? Did you know that every single day she wished someone would talk to her because she was too afraid to start a conversation on her own? Did you know that just a few words from you could have made a big difference in her time in that class? in her day? in her life?

Did you know that while life went on around her, the quiet girl in the back of the class would sometimes look up with a wistful smile and dream that she was a part of it?

Did you know that all it would have taken to get her to open up and become your friend is a few words from you?

Do you remember that quiet girl in the back of the class? Did you know that was me?
