BookCation 2018 Reading Challenge - Off the Beaten Path

Sit down, buckle up, and enjoy the ride because our BookCation takes off now!

One of my favorite things about a road trip is eating at locally owned restaurants wherever I go. I know for some eating something you know at a chain restaurant provides a level of comfort and safety. But for me, there is nothing better than trying something new in a place off the beaten path. I like to research the favorite local spots and rely on the reviews of those who live there and eat at these hidden treasures to guide me along the way to deliciousness. I often get the chance to taste something amazing that I have never could have eaten at home, or just about anywhere else.

And then there is the fact that I know I am supporting a small business. People take such huge risks when they open up a local diner or restaurant. But they do it because they have a passion for food and belief in what they are creating. I love supporting that!

So what does any of that have to do with reading books? Well, I am tackling my BookCation in much the same way I do a regular road trip. I'm going indie! That's right, I am going to try and support those whose passion have led them to write the stories in their heart. Those who have a belief in what they've created. Those who have the courage to self-publish.

Just like I know there are those who prefer the chain restaurants, I know there are those who choose to read only traditionally published books. There is a fear of the unknown both in independently owned restaurants and in independently published books. I get it. You never really know what you're going to get. It's new. It's different. It hasn't been tried by millions across the country or the world and proven to be great. But that is the fun of it! Yes, you may come across some total rubbish that never should have been sent out into the world. But then you might just come across a brilliantly delicious undiscovered treasure that makes you say, "Mmmm... oh yes! I want more of that!"

I will be hitting the first stop on my BookCation later today as I dive into a paranormal story set in Nevada. Check back in next week to catch my review of my first destination and to find out where I will be going next. Or subscribe to have my posts delivered to your email so you will be sure not to miss it!

How about you? What are your BookCation plans? Will you be going traditional, indie, or a bit of both? Let me know in the comments. I'd love to hear from you.
