oh, what time can do

We sit side by side, neither of us bothering to even glance at the other. No words are spoken between us. I pause in my reading to consider the stranger next to me. I can feel his presence there. His body heat warms the cushion of the couch we share. The scent of his cologne is pleasant. His breathing is loud, likely the result of nasal congestion. Occasionally he will clear his throat and the harsh sound breaking the silence startles me. Who is this man and how did he come to sit next to me here?

It seems I knew him once. A long time ago perhaps. Surely there was a time when we were not such strangers. There is something familiar about his raspy breath. That pleasant cologne stirs distant memories. Yes, I am sure I knew him once.

Tentatively I glance over and for a second I catch a glimpse not of the stranger he is today, but of the man I fell in love with so many years ago. I see my husband.

Kimberly Gail grew up in Kansas but has neither lived on a farm nor been swept away to a magical land by a tornado. She does however craft magical worlds in her mind that she lovingly transforms into words through her writing. Fiction Friday: Mythos in America

I am mulling over the idea of writing a series called, Mythos in America. It would be flash fiction pieces that all tie in together within an urban fantasy setting. My short story, A Satyr's Lament falls into this world.

The premise:
100 years ago humans learned they were not alone in the world. Living among them were the Mythos, a variety of mythological beings. At first only those who could easily be disguised as human lived on Earth, and had for centuries. It wasn't until the first Mythos who was unable to blend in arrived in our world that people learned of their existence.
Life among humans was not always easy for these mythological beings. Fear of the unknown caused a harsh and dramatic reaction. Eventually a sort of peace came between the humans and the Mythos, but there are still those who want them regulated or even banished from the Earth.
